Patriotic Alliance (PA) Deputy President Kenny Kunene has stepped down as a Proportional Representation Councillor and as the Transport Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) in Johannesburg.

His resignation comes after public concerns over his ties to an alleged murder syndicate member, which the party is now investigating.

In his resignation letter, Kunene said, “I regret to inform you that I have resigned as a Proportional Representation Councillor for the Patriotic Alliance, effective immediately, and will no longer serve on the mayoral committee for transport.”

He added, “I am stepping away from public life temporarily while my party reviews the allegations against me, which I believe are unfounded. However, I believe it is in the public’s best interest for me to wait until my name is cleared before returning to public service.”

PA President Gayton McKenzie confirmed that Kunene will not hold any official position in the party during the investigation.

“He has agreed to cooperate with the investigation, led by a legal team. Until he is cleared, he will not perform any official duties within the PA,” McKenzie stated.

McKenzie also mentioned that the appointment of investigators is underway and urged party members to remain strong during this time.

Kunene expressed pride in his work, reflecting on his time in office.
