South Africans Gift Cows to Whistleblower Cop in Anti-Corruption Tribute

In an extraordinary show of grassroots support, social media users have crowdfunded R38,000 to purchase two cows for KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, honoring his explosive corruption revelations.

The campaign, launched by activist Chris Excel on X (formerly Twitter) on 6 July, smashed its R35,000 target within days as citizens rallied behind the top cop who exposed alleged political interference in police operations. Organizers plan to source the cattle from a black farmer and use black-owned logistics – turning the gift into a triple celebration of accountability, bravery and economic empowerment.

“This isn’t just about livestock – it’s a cultural symbol of respect for someone risking everything to clean up our country,” said Excel, noting how supporters have dubbed Mkhwanazi “Lord Mkhwanazi” online. The commissioner’s recent allegations implicated senior politicians, prosecutors and a suspected drug cartel in systemic corruption.

The bovine tribute comes as:
• The Public Protector investigates Mkhwanazi’s claims against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu
• The judiciary demands evidence for allegations of compromised courts
• President Ramaphosa prepares to address the nation on the crisis

Political analyst Asanda Ngoasheng says the public’s response reflects deep frustration with graft: “When citizens start buying cattle for officials, it shows how desperate they are for ethical leadership.” The cows will reportedly be delivered to Mkhwanazi’s family homestead in a symbolic nod to traditional recognition of integrity.

As government institutions grapple with the fallout from Mkhwanazi’s revelations, this unusual public endorsement sends a clear message: South Africans are watching – and rewarding – those who take real stands against corruption.
