ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and EFF leader Julius Malema are set to meet former Deputy President David Mabuza at his Barberton home in Mpumalanga. The unexpected visit has sparked speculation about its purpose, with many questioning whether it’s a personal gathering or a sign of political realignment.

Mabuza, who has stayed out of the spotlight since leaving office, remains an influential figure in South African politics. His quiet retreat in Barberton rarely makes headlines—but the arrival of two of the country’s most prominent leaders suggests something significant may be unfolding.

No official explanation has been given, but political analysts and local figures are reading between the lines. A regional councillor remarked, “When Malema and Mbalula travel together to Mpumalanga, it’s never just a casual visit.”

Their relationship has been marked by public clashes in the past. Malema, once an ANC Youth League leader before forming the EFF, has frequently criticized the ANC, while Mbalula, now the party’s secretary-general, has fired back. Their joint appearance at Mabuza’s home raises questions about possible behind-the-scenes discussions.

Mabuza has long been seen as a political strategist with deep connections. His absence from active politics has left many wondering about his next move. Could this meeting hint at a bigger role ahead of the 2026 elections?

In nearby towns, residents are buzzing with curiosity. “Barberton doesn’t usually get this kind of attention,” said a local teacher. “People are already talking about coming out to see them.”

Meanwhile, the visit has also drawn criticism from some who feel political leaders should focus on pressing national issues. A high school student, Ayanda, voiced frustration: “They visit each other, but when girls go missing or people struggle with jobs, where are they?”

With South Africa facing rising crime, unemployment, and social unrest, every move by top leaders is scrutinized. Whether this meeting is personal or political, it has certainly captured public attention. What do you think Mbalula and Malema hope to achieve by meeting Mabuza?
