ANC Backs Mchunu’s Decision to Disband Political Killings Task Team Amid Growing Controversy

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has publicly defended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s controversial decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team, insisting the move followed proper procedures and was made without ulterior motives.

The decision—which has drawn sharp criticism since KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused it of undermining election security—was reportedly intended to consolidate investigations into broader crime-fighting units.

Mbalula urged calm pending an official Police Ministry response, but opposition parties and activists continue demanding transparency. The disbandment’s timing—ahead of 2026 local elections—has fueled suspicions about motives, especially given the task team’s role in probing assassinations tied to political rivalries.

As scrutiny intensifies, the ANC faces mounting pressure to prove the restructuring wasn’t a backdoor maneuver to weaken accountability in South Africa’s most violence-prone province.
