A shocking arrest in the N1 highway shooting of actress Tebogo Thobejane has uncovered a web of corruption linking senior police officials and politicians to violent crime and tender fraud. Investigators say digital evidence from the case reveals a systemic “protection racket” for well-connected business figures.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has directly accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of shielding controversial businessman Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, who allegedly secured a R360 million police contract while facing attempted murder charges. WhatsApp messages show Matlala’s suspected involvement in funding ANC events through questionable police tenders before the contract was abruptly canceled in May 2025.

The Thobejane shooting, initially treated as an isolated incident, is now seen as potentially connected to this corruption network. Sources say the actress may have had information about key players before surviving the apparent assassination attempt.

“This goes beyond crime-fighting—we’re dealing with institutional decay,” a senior investigator told journalists anonymously.

While Mchunu denies the allegations as “defamatory,” Mkhwanazi is pushing for an independent inquiry and suspensions of implicated officials. The Presidency has remained silent as pressure mounts for accountability.
