Former MK Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu has stirred controversy with his recent press conference, drawing sharp reactions from political figures, including Julius Malema and Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla.
During his briefing on 19 June, Shivambu openly criticized his former parties, calling the ANC “directionless” and describing the EFF as a “cult.” He also hinted at forming his own political movement, though no official launch has been confirmed.
In remarks widely seen as targeting Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla—daughter of former president Jacob Zuma and a key MK Party figure—Shivambu stated, “When you raise issues internally, you shouldn’t gossip about them elsewhere. I voiced my concerns within MK, even when it was difficult.” He added, “I openly challenge those who act untouchable—people who take drugs, tweet at night, and insult others.”
Though he didn’t name anyone, social media users quickly linked his comments to Duduzile, known for her outspoken online presence.
EFF leader Julius Malema responded indirectly, posting a video of the party’s leadership on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: *“The leadership we have is quite alright.”* Many viewed this as a dismissal of Shivambu’s remarks.
Duduzile, meanwhile, shared cryptic posts but did not directly address Shivambu.
With tensions rising, political observers are watching to see if Shivambu will proceed with launching his own party—potentially adding another dimension to South Africa’s shifting political landscape.
