Renowned sports commentator and SuperSport presenter Phumlani Msibi has passed away, his employer confirmed in a social media statement on Friday evening.

The veteran broadcaster, whose distinctive voice and insightful commentary made him a household name, leaves behind a legacy that shaped South African sports media for decades.

“SuperSport is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our colleague and friend Phumlani Msibi,” the statement read. “Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”

Msibi’s career spanned multiple sporting codes, with his passionate delivery and encyclopedic knowledge earning him respect across the industry. From football to rugby, his commentary became the soundtrack to countless memorable sporting moments for South African audiences.

Tributes began pouring in immediately after the announcement, with fellow broadcasters, athletes and fans remembering Msibi’s professionalism, warmth and contribution to sports journalism.

No further details regarding the circumstances of his passing were immediately available. The sports community has called for privacy for Msibi’s family as they process their loss.

SuperSport indicated they would honor Msibi’s legacy with special programming tributes in coming days. His voice – once the vibrant narrator of South Africa’s greatest sporting triumphs – now leaves behind an irreplaceable void in the broadcasting world.
