A devastating collision on the R34 near Vryheid has left twelve people dead and 32 others injured. The fatal crash occurred just after midnight on Tuesday when a truck collided with a bus carrying passengers returning from Youth Day celebrations in Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma confirmed the tragedy, stating that emergency services responded immediately to the scene. Preliminary reports indicate the truck first hit the bus head-on before sideswiping it, causing catastrophic damage.

Casualty Breakdown:
• 12 fatalities (10 at scene, 2 later in hospital)
• 10 seriously injured (hospitalized)
• 22 with minor injuries
• 6 unharmed passengers
• Both drivers survived

The bus was reportedly transporting political party supporters from Monday’s Youth Day events in Durban, though authorities haven’t specified which party. The roadway remains closed as investigators from the Road Traffic Inspectorate, Road Traffic Management Corporation and SAPS examine the crash site.

“This is a profound tragedy,” said MEC Duma, extending condolences to bereaved families. “We’re working to notify all affected families and determine exactly how this horrific accident occurred.”

This marks the second serious bus accident on the R34 this year. In March, four IFP supporters were hospitalized when their bus overturned after allegedly running a stop sign.

Authorities urge motorists to avoid the area while cleanup and investigations continue. The Transport Department has pledged a thorough probe into the collision’s causes as questions emerge about road safety on this stretch of highway.
