ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has drawn sharp criticism after imitating former president Jacob Zuma during a media briefing, fueling tensions as South Africa negotiates a new coalition government. The incident, caught on video and widely shared online, has divided public opinion, with some dismissing it as lighthearted banter while others see it as disrespectful and damaging to political dialogue.
The mimicry happened as Mbalula discussed the ANC’s coalition negotiations following the 2024 elections, which left no party with an outright majority. While criticizing Zuma’s MK Party, Mbalula imitated the former president’s mannerisms and laughter, prompting mixed reactions—laughter from some in attendance but anger from MK Party supporters.
The MK Party condemned the act, calling it arrogant and unbecoming of a senior ANC leader. “This is not the time for mockery,” said MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela. “Mbalula’s behavior shows a party struggling to accept its declining influence.”

Mbalula later defended himself on social media, saying he was exposing what he called the “absurdity” of the MK Party’s positions. He insisted the ANC remains focused on constructive negotiations.
Political analysts, however, warn that such actions could harm delicate coalition talks. “Political satire has its place, but timing and tone matter,” said Professor Susan Booysen. “This risks being seen as provocative rather than funny.”
The ANC is currently in discussions with parties like the DA, EFF, and IFP to form a Government of National Unity. While it’s unclear if Mbalula’s mimicry will affect negotiations, it has reignited debates about political decorum in South Africa’s evolving democracy.
