Ramaphosa Criticizes Minister’s Behavior in Parliament After Viral Video

President Cyril Ramaphosa has voiced his disappointment after a video showing Public Enterprises Minister Thandeka Mkhize appearing distracted during a key parliamentary debate went viral. The footage, from last week’s National Assembly session on Eskom’s challenges and South Africa’s energy crisis, depicted Mkhize chewing gum and seeming disengaged while other MPs debated urgent solutions.

Speaking at a Cape Town media briefing, Ramaphosa stressed the need for professionalism among government officials, particularly during critical national discussions. He said the minister’s conduct fell short of expected standards and risked eroding public trust. The president confirmed he had contacted Mkhize for an explanation and hinted at possible disciplinary steps.

The video sparked sharp criticism, with opposition parties like the DA and EFF labeling Mkhize’s behavior as disrespectful to Parliament. Some have demanded her removal, arguing that such actions weaken public confidence in leadership—especially amid ongoing power cuts and economic struggles. Political analyst Thabo Modise noted the incident highlights a troubling gap between leaders and citizens facing daily hardships.

Mkhize has yet to comment publicly, though her office says a response is forthcoming. The controversy adds to mounting scrutiny of Ramaphosa’s cabinet at a time when the government faces growing skepticism over its accountability. While the president’s rebuke signals an intent to uphold standards, observers await concrete measures to reinforce professionalism in his administration.

The incident underscores the need for focused and respectful leadership, particularly as South Africa navigates complex crises.
