MK Party’s Papa Penny Faces Mockery Over Parliamentary Speech, Sparks Language Debate

A video of MK Party member and musician Papa Penny struggling to express himself in Parliament has gone viral, drawing mixed reactions online. The clip shows the veteran artist, now part of the sports, arts, and culture committee, having difficulty following parliamentary procedures and mispronouncing English words during a session.

Broadcaster Gareth Cliff reacted sarcastically to the footage, posting a simple “Wow,” which fueled further debate. While some social media users mocked Papa Penny’s speech, others defended him, arguing that Parliament’s reliance on English disadvantages those more fluent in African languages.

The controversy comes shortly after the MK Party removed Floyd Shivambu as Secretary General, reassigning him to the National Assembly. Another clip of Papa Penny questioning South African Football Association CFO Gronie Hlayoo also circulated, showing him being reminded to wait for the chair’s recognition before speaking.

The incident has reignited discussions about language barriers in South Africa’s political spaces, with critics questioning whether Parliament accommodates diverse linguistic backgrounds fairly. Supporters of Papa Penny argue that his contributions should not be dismissed based on language proficiency, while detractors say clarity is essential for effective governance.

Cliff’s remark sparked a broader conversation, with some accusing him of elitism, while others echoed his apparent disbelief. As the debate continues, the incident highlights ongoing tensions around representation and accessibility in the country’s political processes.
