Ahead of a critical 2018 meeting between then-President Cyril Ramaphosa and US leader Donald Trump, billionaire mining magnate Patrice Motsepe played a crucial advisory role in shaping South Africa’s diplomatic approach, multiple sources have revealed.

While Motsepe maintained no official government position, his unique combination of global business expertise and political insight made him an invaluable behind-the-scenes strategist. Senior officials consulted him to help craft South Africa’s stance—one that needed to balance national interests with the realities of dealing with Trump’s unpredictable administration.

Business Acumen Meets Statecraft
Government insiders disclosed that Motsepe’s guidance focused on ensuring South Africa projected confidence without provocation. “He emphasized that we needed to be firm on principles but pragmatic in tone,” said one official. “His key advice was: ‘Don’t appear defensive—frame every issue in terms of mutual benefit.’”

Motsepe’s input proved particularly valuable on sensitive topics like land reform and trade, where Trump’s team had previously expressed skepticism. The mining tycoon, who leads African Rainbow Minerals and chairs the Confederation of African Football (CAF), urged the delegation to emphasize investment opportunities rather than ideological debates.
