African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu has paid tribute to the late Women’s League Deputy President, Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe, describing her as a remarkable leader who dedicated her life to gender equality, peace, and unity.

Mnganga-Gcabashe passed away over the weekend after a brief illness at her home in Westville, Durban. ANC leaders, including Bhengu, visited her family to offer condolences.

Throughout her political career, Mnganga-Gcabashe held several key roles, including serving as the ANC Women’s League provincial chairperson in KwaZulu-Natal, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, and, most recently, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism. She was elected deputy president of the ANC Women’s League in 2023.

Bhengu reflected on her legacy, saying, “We are talking about someone who worked tirelessly and was recognized for her dedication to service, gender equality, and peace. She was one of the great peacemakers of our time. Her election as Deputy President of the ANC Women’s League was a pivotal moment—a revival of the organization.”

Mike Mabuyakhulu, convenor of the ANC’s provincial task team in KwaZulu-Natal, also honored Mnganga-Gcabashe, praising her as a diligent leader. “She served with distinction, especially during challenging and violent periods in our province. Her work in the Human Settlements Department in eThekwini demonstrated her deep commitment to serving the people,” Mabuyakhulu said.

The ANC and its structures continue to mourn the loss of a leader who played a significant role in advancing women’s rights and social justice.
