A 38-year-old Tongaat man, recently released on parole after serving part of a murder sentence, has been arrested again—this time for a vicious attempted murder that has left the community in shock.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released ahead of his court appearance, was taken into custody on Thursday following an alleged stabbing near a Buffelsdale spaza shop. Witnesses say the attack was sudden and unprovoked.

Reports indicate that the victim, a woman, was standing near the shop when the man approached her and allegedly demanded sex. When she refused, he reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed her repeatedly in the abdomen with such brutality that her intestines were exposed.

“He didn’t argue or shout—he just pulled the knife and started stabbing her like he wanted to kill her,” said one witness, still in shock. “She collapsed, screaming, and people nearby chased him down before he could escape.”

Emergency responders rushed the woman to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. Medical staff have confirmed she is in critical but stable condition.

The suspect had been on parole for less than a year after serving time for a prior murder conviction. Police confirmed that his arrest also constitutes a parole violation, which could lead to additional charges.

The attack has sparked outrage among residents, with many questioning how a convicted murderer was released without stricter supervision. Local leaders are demanding a review of parole procedures to prevent similar incidents.

“This isn’t just about one man’s actions—it’s about a system that failed to protect the public,” said ward councillor Prakash Naidoo. “A life was almost lost because a violent criminal was allowed back on the streets.”

Authorities have urged calm as the investigation continues. The suspect is set to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon, where prosecutors are expected to oppose bail.
