Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu has expressed strong condemnation and deep concern following disturbing allegations against a 54-year-old traditional leader in KwaZulu-Natal, accused of taking advantage of an 18-year-old young woman who had reportedly sought a lift from him.

According to initial reports, the matter has been formally reported to the local authorities, and a criminal investigation is currently underway. Minister Mchunu described the allegations as “deeply troubling,” reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance stance on any form of abuse, regardless of the social or traditional standing of the accused.

“It is unacceptable for any individual, particularly someone in a position of leadership and trust, to be implicated in such serious accusations,” said Mchunu. “Traditional leaders are expected to serve as custodians of morality and protectors of community values — not violators of them.”

The Minister stressed that the rule of law must be upheld, and that justice must be pursued without fear or favour. Law enforcement agencies have confirmed that an official case has been opened and that investigators are currently gathering evidence and interviewing involved parties. Police officials have assured the public that the case will be handled with sensitivity, especially in regard to the young woman’s well-being.

Minister Mchunu also called on community leaders and traditional institutions to cooperate fully with the investigation and to promote accountability and transparency in their respective communities.

“We cannot allow a culture of silence or protection of individuals due to status or influence. Every allegation of abuse must be treated seriously and investigated thoroughly,” he said.

The incident has sparked widespread attention across KwaZulu-Natal, reviving concerns over the vulnerability of young women and the responsibilities of those in traditional authority. Civil society groups and gender-based violence activists have echoed the Minister’s sentiments, calling for justice and greater oversight of traditional leaders’ conduct.

As the investigation continues, authorities have urged the public not to rush to judgment and to allow the legal process to unfold. Regular updates will be provided by the police as more information becomes available.

Minister Mchunu concluded by reaffirming that no one is above the law, adding: “The safety and dignity of our people, particularly young women, must always come first. Accountability is non-negotiable.”
