Julius Malema Slams ANC for Betraying Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s Legacy

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema used the Freedom Day 2025 celebrations to deliver a sharp rebuke to the African National Congress (ANC), accusing the ruling party of betraying the legacy of struggle icon Mama Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela.

Speaking at the EFF rally in Brandfort, across from the modest house where Mama Winnie was banished during apartheid, Malema paid an emotional tribute to her sacrifices and resilience. He accused the ANC of abandoning the principles she fought for, claiming the party had traded the ideals of liberation for personal enrichment and corruption.

“The ANC of Mama Winnie does not exist anymore. They have sold out to greed, and today, the poor remain in squalor while the leaders live in luxury,” Malema said.

His speech also addressed broader national concerns, highlighting issues such as poor service delivery in Masilonyana and the ongoing budget crisis under the ANC-DA Government of National Unity (GNU). Malema reaffirmed the EFF’s commitment to supporting global liberation movements, specifically mentioning Palestine and Burkina Faso.

While Malema’s address was met with loud support at the rally, reactions online were mixed. Some critics took the opportunity to target the EFF, with one social media user commenting, “EFF is losing members,” and another mocking, “EFF is now a laughing stock.”

Despite the backlash, Malema remained firm, encouraging South Africans to reject the current political establishment and to pursue true economic freedom.

Freedom Day 2025 served as a moment of reflection on South Africa’s democratic achievements but also highlighted the deep political divisions shaping the country’s future.
