Mashaba Criticizes Shivambu Over Viral Meeting With Fugitive Bushiri

Former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has strongly condemned EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu’s recent visit to controversial Malawian preacher Shepherd Bushiri, who is a fugitive from South African justice. The meeting, which went viral on social media, sparked sharp criticism from Mashaba, known for his outspoken views.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mashaba did not hold back, calling Shivambu’s association with Bushiri “a grave insult to South Africa’s law-abiding citizens.” He questioned Shivambu’s judgment, posting: “How do you justify your affiliation with criminals, @FloydShivambu?”

Bushiri, who faces multiple fraud and money laundering charges in South Africa, fled the country in 2020 while on bail, violating his court conditions. His escape led to an Interpol red notice, yet he remains in Malawi, where authorities have refused to extradite him. Mashaba argued that Shivambu’s decision to meet him undermines public trust in leaders.

“Leaders must lead by example,” Mashaba wrote, emphasizing that associating with an alleged criminal sends the wrong message. He expressed concern that such actions normalize disrespect for the law, particularly when high-profile figures engage with fugitives.

Public reaction has been divided. While some, like Mashaba, see Shivambu’s visit as morally indefensible, others argue it may have been a private or political engagement unrelated to Bushiri’s legal troubles. The EFF has yet to officially comment on the matter.

Mashaba’s remarks have reignited debates about accountability, ethical leadership, and the perception of South Africa’s justice system. His challenge to Shivambu—“How do you justify this?”—puts pressure on the EFF leader to respond, as scrutiny over the meeting grows.

Meanwhile, Bushiri continues to operate his ministry from Malawi, while South African authorities remain unable to secure his return for trial. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between legal accountability and political alliances in the region.
