ANC Drops the Hammer: “The DA Must Go” – Is South Africa’s Unity Government on the Brink?

South Africa’s fragile Government of National Unity (GNU) is teetering on the edge after the ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) delivered a bombshell verdict in closed-door talks: The DA’s time in the coalition may be up.

Frustration within the ruling party has reached a breaking point, with senior ANC figures accusing their coalition partners of overreach, arrogance, and a blatant power grab. “They’ve forgotten this is a partnership, not a hostile takeover,” a high-ranking ANC insider fumed. “The DA behaves like they won the election outright—enough is enough.”

The DA’s aggressive maneuvering—from demanding key cabinet posts to publicly undermining ANC policies—has ignited a slow-burning fuse. But last week’s budget revolt, where DA MPs voted against Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s fiscal framework, appears to have been the last straw.

Now, the ANC is weighing its options:

  • A major cabinet reshuffle to sideline DA ministers
  • Formal expulsion from the GNU, risking total collapse
  • A desperate renegotiation—but only if the DA backs down

DA’s Dilemma: Double Down or Retreat?

DA leader John Steenhuisen has so far struck a defiant tone, insisting his party won’t be a “rubber stamp” for ANC policies. But behind the scenes, the DA’s Federal Executive is scrambling to assess the fallout. If the ANC follows through, the DA could find itself out in the cold—and South Africa could plunge into political chaos.

What’s Next?

  • ANC’s NEC meeting (scheduled for this week) could finalize the DA’s fate
  • MK Party and EFF watching closely, ready to exploit any implosion
  • Markets on edge as fears of policy paralysis grow

The Bottom Line

This isn’t just a coalition spat—it’s a battle for South Africa’s political soul. The GNU was born from compromise, but if the ANC and DA can’t salvage this marriage of inconvenience, the fallout could destabilize the economy, derail reforms, and leave voters disillusioned.

One thing is clear: The gloves are off. The ANC has issued its warning. Now, the DA must decide—will it bend, or will it burn the GNU to the ground?
