The normally staid budget debate took an unexpected turn on 2 April 2025 when a seemingly ordinary interaction between two opposition figures became the talk of political circles. A photograph shared by EFF MP Sixolise Gcilishe showed EFF leader Julius Malema in conversation with MK Party MP Duduzile Zuma – but it was her focused gaze at Malema that sparked widespread speculation and debate.

The image, posted without commentary by the EFF’s communications team, quickly went viral, with observers divided in their interpretations. Some suggested the intensity of Zuma’s attention indicated professional admiration, while others playfully speculated about personal fascination. The moment occurred during a crucial parliamentary session where both leaders were expected to be political adversaries, adding to the intrigue.

Political analysts note the encounter takes place against a backdrop of shifting alliances in South African opposition politics. Both the EFF and MK Party position themselves as radical alternatives to the ANC, sharing some ideological ground despite their separate trajectories. Malema’s complex history with Duduzile’s father, former president Jacob Zuma – from ANC comrades to political opponents – adds another layer to any interaction between them.

The ruling ANC has recently faced mounting criticism over economic management, making opposition cooperation a potentially significant development. Some observers suggest the apparent warmth between the two figures could hint at future collaboration, while others caution against reading too much into a single moment.

University of Pretoria political studies professor Lebogang Mathole commented: “In South Africa’s highly personalized political environment, these visual cues often carry more weight than policy statements. Whether this indicates genuine rapprochement or simply a fleeting moment is impossible to say, but it’s certainly captured public imagination.”

Both parties have remained silent on the speculation, with the EFF focusing its public statements on budget criticism and the MK Party maintaining its usual guarded approach to media inquiries. However, the incident has undoubtedly added a human dimension to what is typically a technical fiscal debate, reminding observers that politics remains as much about personalities as it is about policies.

As Parliament moves forward with budget deliberations, many will be watching to see whether this interaction proves to be an isolated moment or the beginning of a more consequential political dynamic between two of the country’s most prominent opposition forces.
