Ex-Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula Denies Corruption Claims, Calls Probe Politically Motivated

Former Speaker of South Africa’s National Assembly and ex-Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has vehemently denied allegations of corruption and bribery, dismissing the charges as a politically driven smear campaign.

The charges relate to her time as Defense Minister, where she is accused of soliciting and accepting R2.3 million in bribes from a defense contractor in exchange for facilitating lucrative contracts. Despite the serious allegations, Mapisa-Nqakula maintains her innocence, insisting she has “never engaged in corruption” and is prepared to cooperate fully with investigations.

Claims of a Flawed Investigation

Mapisa-Nqakula has criticized the handling of the probe, accusing authorities of “unfairly leaking details to the media” and relying on a “weak” case. She further alleged that the Investigating Directorate employed “apartheid-era tactics” in targeting her.

Reports of the investigation first surfaced in March 2024, but Mapisa-Nqakula claimed she was never formally notified. She emphasized her commitment to ethical conduct throughout her decades in public service.

Resignation and Court Appearance

In April 2024, she stepped down as Speaker of the National Assembly, stating her resignation was to “protect Parliament’s integrity” rather than an admission of guilt. Shortly after, she was formally charged with corruption and money laundering.

During her court appearance, she reiterated her stance, calling the allegations “baseless and politically motivated.”

Defiant Amid Legal Battle

Despite the legal turmoil, Mapisa-Nqakula remains resolute, vowing to clear her name.

“I have served this country with honesty and dedication. These accusations are not just an attack on me but an attempt to undermine my legacy,” she stated.

The case continues to unfold, with Mapisa-Nqakula’s legal team preparing a robust defense while critics demand accountability. As the proceedings advance, the controversy raises broader questions about political power, accountability, and justice in South Africa’s post-apartheid landscape.
