DA Calls for Hawks Investigation Into ANC-Linked Corruption Claims in Free State District

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has formally requested the Hawks to urgently investigate allegations of corruption involving ANC officials in the Fezile Dabi District of the Free State. The move marks the latest escalation in political tensions as opposition parties intensify pressure on the ruling party over claims of mismanagement of public funds and questionable dealings.

According to the DA, mounting evidence suggests that senior ANC figures in the region may have engaged in financial irregularities, including tender fraud and fiscal mismanagement. While specific details remain undisclosed, sources indicate that millions in municipal funds could have been diverted through suspicious contracts and alleged kickback schemes.

The DA’s demand for a probe follows growing concerns over service delivery failures and allegations that development funds intended for local communities were instead funneled to benefit politically connected individuals. The opposition party argues that the Fezile Dabi case reflects broader patterns of financial misconduct plaguing municipalities across the Free State.

Hawks officials have not yet confirmed whether they will pursue a full investigation, but public pressure is growing for accountability. Should the elite anti-corruption unit take up the case, it could trigger significant repercussions for the ANC’s regional leadership and expose entrenched corruption networks.

ANC representatives in Fezile Dabi have dismissed the allegations as a politically motivated smear campaign, accusing the DA of weaponizing law enforcement ahead of upcoming local government elections. They insist no wrongdoing has been proven and argue that the claims rely on speculation rather than concrete evidence.

However, with the Free State still grappling with the fallout of high-profile graft scandals—including the infamous Estina Dairy case—public trust in provincial governance remains severely eroded. If the Hawks launch an investigation and uncover misconduct, it could deal another blow to the ANC’s credibility in the region.

As watchdog groups and opposition parties monitor developments, the case highlights ongoing challenges in combating graft and restoring accountability in South Africa’s local governments.
