Leaked WhatsApp Messages Reveal Alleged Plot to Prosecute Deputy President Mashatile

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is embroiled in a political scandal following the leak of WhatsApp messages suggesting a coordinated effort by two cabinet ministers and a senior National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) official to pursue perjury charges against him. The explosive allegations, if verified, could destabilize the ANC and raise serious concerns about political interference in South Africa’s justice system.

The Alleged Plot

According to the leaked messages, the two ministers allegedly pressured the NPA official to prosecute Mashatile over perjury claims linked to a dispute over the ANC’s 2022 North West provincial conference. One minister reportedly instructed the official to “please proceed with the prosecution,” while another appeared to confirm high-level awareness of the plan.

The NPA official, while seemingly agreeing to proceed, expressed unease about charging a sitting deputy president, stating: “It’s not often that you get to charge a deputy president of a country.”

Denials and Accusations

The implicated NPA official has dismissed the messages as fabricated, citing advanced technology that can manipulate digital communications. “Nobody will dare try and do that with me. I am proud of my integrity,” the official stated, denying any political pressure.

However, Mashatile’s spokesperson, Keith Khoza, confirmed the deputy president was aware of the messages, calling them evidence of “malicious and political prosecution.”

Background: The North West ANC Dispute

The controversy stems from a legal challenge against the legitimacy of the ANC’s 2022 North West conference, where Nono Maloyi was elected chairperson. Opponents argue the interim provincial committee (IPC) overseeing the event lacked proper authorization.

Mashatile’s alleged perjury centers on his sworn affidavit claiming the ANC’s NEC had reappointed the IPC—despite reports that some members had already resigned or died by that time.

NPA’s Shifting Stance

Initially, the NPA in North West declined to prosecute due to insufficient evidence. However, NPA headquarters later ordered a review, fueling suspicions of political meddling.

Political Fallout

The leaked messages have intensified ANC infighting, with critics accusing factions of weaponizing the justice system. The scandal threatens to further erode public trust in both the ruling party and the NPA.

Key Questions

  1. Are the WhatsApp messages genuine? Forensic verification is critical.
  2. Was there political pressure on the NPA? An independent probe is needed.
  3. What are the motives behind the North West ANC dispute? Internal party rivalries may be driving the case.
  4. What does this mean for South Africa? The scandal risks deepening political instability and damaging judicial credibility.

As the ANC’s NEC meets, the party faces mounting pressure to address the allegations—or risk another damaging crisis ahead of the 2024 elections.
