Akhonamathemba “Sweet Guluva” Mbele, the newly crowned champion of Big Brother Mzansi Season 5, walked away with a life-changing R2 million—but the 23-year-old footballer and barber from KwaZulu-Natal admits he had no idea just how much viewers loved him until the finale.

Sweet Guluva triumphed over runner-up Uyanda Hlangabezo, a pedagogical practitioner from Gqeberha, in a nail-biting conclusion to the season.

“I only realized how popular I was when I stepped out of the house last night,” he told *Sowetan* on Monday. “I never had a strategy—I just stayed true to myself, hoping people would connect with me.”

The moment of victory was surreal. “When Smash Afrika was about to announce the winner, I was so nervous I thought I’d pee myself,” he laughed. “I was shaking. When he called my name, I lost it—I couldn’t believe it. More than anything, I’m just grateful for all the love and support.”

Sweet Guluva won over audiences with his down-to-earth charm and relatable personality. However, he confessed that one challenge stood out: “Speaking English 24/7 was tough at first, but I got used to it.”

Now R2 million richer, he plans to invest in property and secure his family’s future. “I want to multiply this money, take care of my loved ones, and explore opportunities,” he said.

The top five also included Nsuku Mabunda, Karabo “Jojo” Sejojo, and Fortunate “Nate” Setwaba.

What’s Next for Sweet Guluva?
Before entering the house, he aimed to last two months—but his journey exceeded expectations. Now, he’s eyeing the entertainment industry. “I want to make music—gqom and amapiano—and maybe act,” he shared. “Collaborating with artists like Mr Nation, Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, and DJ Lag would be fire.”

What About His Romance with Ash-ley Ogle?
His on-screen relationship with Ash-ley Ogle had fans buzzing, especially after she vowed to wait for him post-eviction. Sweet Guluva remained coy about their future but confirmed their bond was real.

“Right now, I can’t say much—I just left the house and need time to adjust,” he said. “But what we had was genuine. She’s smart, creative, and beautiful. I’ll see her soon, and we’ll figure things out.”

With his charm, talent, and newfound fortune, Sweet Guluva’s journey is only just beginning.
