ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula Accuses Members of Using “Drunkards” to Oust Mayor

In a shocking revelation that underscores the deepening divisions within the African National Congress (ANC), Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has accused certain party members of collaborating with individuals he referred to as “drunkards” to orchestrate the removal of a mayor. This explosive statement adds to growing concerns over internal factionalism and unethical tactics within the ANC as it prepares for crucial elections.

Speaking candidly during a political address, Mbalula expressed frustration over what he described as undisciplined and unethical strategies being employed to achieve political objectives. While he did not name specific individuals, his remarks suggest a significant rift within the party, particularly regarding power struggles at the municipal level.

The controversy follows the recent removal of Lindi Nhaca, the mayor of KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal. Nhaca was suspended by the ANC in the province for “major insubordination,” with the party accusing her of defying directives. However, Mbalula’s latest comments imply that her removal may have involved underhanded tactics, including the alleged use of “drunkards” as political tools.

The ANC, which has long prided itself on discipline and unity, is increasingly embroiled in internal battles that threaten its credibility. Mbalula’s reference to individuals using such unconventional and questionable methods raises serious concerns about the lengths to which some factions within the party are willing to go to consolidate power.

Political analysts view Mbalula’s statement as a reflection of growing frustration within the ANC’s top leadership over how internal conflicts are being managed. “Mbalula’s remarks suggest that factional battles have reached a new low,” said a senior political expert. “If the ANC is resorting to such tactics to remove its own mayors, it signals a worrying decline in the party’s ability to handle its internal affairs with integrity.”

The ANC has yet to issue an official response to Mbalula’s claims, but insiders suggest that his comments could further deepen divisions within the party. Some members have expressed concern over how these revelations might impact the ANC’s public image, especially as the party works to regain public trust ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

This latest controversy highlights the challenges facing the ANC as it navigates internal strife and external pressures. With factionalism and allegations of unethical behavior threatening to erode its credibility, the party’s ability to present a united front and restore public confidence remains in question.

As the ANC grapples with these issues, the focus will be on whether its leadership can address internal divisions and uphold the principles of transparency and accountability. For now, Mbalula’s explosive remarks serve as a stark reminder of the turbulent dynamics within South Africa’s ruling party.
