Jacob Zuma Claims ANC Membership While Leading MK Party, Stirring Political Controversy

Former South African President and leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, Jacob Zuma, has made a striking declaration about his political allegiance, asserting that he remains a member of the African National Congress (ANC) even as he leads the MK Party. His comments have added a new layer of intrigue to South Africa’s political landscape as the country prepares for the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at a book launch event, Zuma unequivocally stated, “I am an ANC member, for your information, and I will continue to be one until the end. But I will also be Umkhonto weSizwe in all respects; what a great thing to mention.” His remarks suggest that, despite forming and leading the MK Party, he still considers himself an ANC member—a position that contradicts the party’s policies on dual membership.

Zuma also hinted at an explanation for his stance, saying, “I am telling the truth. If I wasn’t here for the book launch, I would tell you why I say so, but I will tell you later.” This cryptic statement has left many speculating about his broader strategy and intentions within the political arena.

The ANC has previously taken a firm stance against individuals who associate with or support other political parties. In December 2023, the party made it clear that anyone aligning with the MK Party would be in violation of its constitution. Despite this, Zuma’s announcement challenges the perception that his departure from the ANC is complete.

Political analysts suggest that Zuma may be attempting to maintain influence over ANC supporters while simultaneously building the MK Party as a viable alternative. His deep historical ties to the ANC and his legacy within the party complicate any potential disciplinary action. However, the ANC leadership may be compelled to formally address his declaration to preserve internal unity.

Since its formation, the MK Party has gained significant traction, particularly among ANC dissidents and Zuma loyalists in KwaZulu-Natal. His ability to attract support from traditional ANC strongholds has fueled speculation that the party could pose a significant challenge in the upcoming elections.

As the 2024 elections approach, Zuma’s dual allegiance raises critical questions about the future of South Africa’s political landscape. Will the ANC take action against its former president, or will Zuma’s influence continue to blur the lines between the two parties? One thing is certain: Zuma’s latest move has added a dramatic twist to an already complex political narrative.
