Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) against KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police commissioner, Lt-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
He accuses Mkhwanazi of interfering in the arrest of former prison head Nelly Ndlovu on drug-related charges.
IPID has given Mkhwanazi a week to respond to allegations that he instructed officers not to file a case after ammunition and suspected drugs were discovered at Ndlovu’s residence.
Some officials are calling for him to be charged with obstruction of justice, but Mkhwanazi denies the accusations, labeling them an attempt to undermine his efforts to combat corruption.
Mkhwanazi also alleges that an individual close to Mchunu warned him about a plot to damage his reputation.
