VAT Hike to 17% Sparks Controversy, Forces Postponement of Budget Speech

The 2025 Budget Speech has been postponed and rescheduled for next month following a contentious proposal by the ANC to increase Value-Added Tax (VAT) from 15% to 17%. The proposed hike, aimed at addressing revenue shortfalls, was met with fierce opposition from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and other political parties, leading to a deadlock in parliamentary discussions.

Watch Video Below:

The ANC’s proposal to raise VAT to 17% has sparked widespread criticism, with opponents arguing that it would place an additional burden on already struggling households and businesses. The DA, in particular, has condemned the move, stating that it would disproportionately affect low-income earners and exacerbate economic inequality.

The disagreement over the VAT increase created a stalemate in Parliament, forcing the postponement of the budget speech. The rescheduling has raised concerns about the government’s ability to address pressing economic challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, and sluggish growth.

Critics of the VAT hike have called for alternative measures to boost revenue, such as curbing government expenditure and tackling corruption. Meanwhile, the ANC has defended its proposal, arguing that the increase is necessary to fund critical public services and infrastructure projects.

As the debate continues, all eyes will be on the rescheduled budget speech next month, where the government is expected to present a revised plan to address the country’s fiscal challenges. The outcome of these discussions will have significant implications for South Africa’s economic recovery and the livelihoods of its citizens.
