Mbuyiseni Ndlozi Surprises Many by Praising Ramaphosa’s “Pro-Poor” Policies

In a surprising departure from his usual critiques, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Mbuyiseni Ndlozi recently commended President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration for its focus on tackling inequality. Ndlozi, known for his sharp and often scathing commentary on the president, took to X (formerly Twitter) to acknowledge what he called a “pro-poor” agenda driven by key legislative reforms.

Ndlozi specifically praised three policies: the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill, the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill, and the Expropriation Bill. According to Ndlozi, these reforms demonstrate a genuine effort by the Ramaphosa administration to address deep-rooted inequalities in healthcare, education, and land ownership.

National Health Insurance: Bridging the Healthcare Gap

Ndlozi highlighted the NHI Bill as a landmark initiative aimed at providing universal healthcare for all South Africans. The bill promises to reduce the healthcare disparity between rich and poor citizens by ensuring access to quality medical care for all. While critics have questioned the financial sustainability of the NHI, Ndlozi argued that it is a necessary step toward a more equitable society, calling it a “bold move toward justice in healthcare.”

Education Reform: Building an Inclusive System

The BELA Bill also drew praise from Ndlozi for its focus on improving infrastructure and empowering underprivileged schools. He particularly lauded the emphasis on mother-tongue instruction, which he believes will help close the learning gap for many students. The bill also aims to give more autonomy to school governing bodies and address long-standing issues such as overcrowded classrooms and resource shortages in rural and township schools.

The Expropriation Bill: Tackling Land Inequality

The most controversial of the reforms, the Expropriation Bill, also received Ndlozi’s endorsement. He described the bill, which allows for land expropriation without compensation in specific cases, as a critical tool for correcting historical injustices. While opposition parties and some business groups have raised concerns about its potential impact on the economy, Ndlozi sees it as a necessary step to restore dignity and economic power to communities affected by apartheid-era land dispossession.

A Balanced Perspective

Though Ndlozi’s praise was notable, he maintained a balanced tone, acknowledging the administration’s flaws in areas like economic growth and job creation. Still, his remarks highlighted that recognizing progress does not equate to overlooking failures.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

Ndlozi’s comments sparked a wide range of reactions. Some praised him for his ability to set aside political rivalry and acknowledge positive developments, while others questioned the practicality and effectiveness of the policies. Supporters of Ramaphosa welcomed the acknowledgment, seeing it as proof of the policies’ potential impact.

Critics, however, remain skeptical. “It’s easy to praise policy on paper,” wrote one user, “but implementation is where it counts.”

A Moment of Unity?

Ndlozi’s unexpected support for some government policies may signal the potential for greater collaboration between opposing political forces in addressing South Africa’s pressing challenges. While ideological differences remain vast, moments like this highlight the possibility of unity when the goal is improving the lives of ordinary South Africans.

As South Africa grapples with ongoing economic pressures and social unrest, this rare moment of recognition underscores the importance of pragmatic solutions and cooperation in building a more equitable future.
