A recent executive order signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked an unprecedented surge in relocation interest among South Africans. According to Neil Diamond, head of the South African Chamber of Commerce in the United States, more than 10,000 South Africans submitted inquiries to relocate to the U.S. within just 18 hours of the order being signed.

“We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed,” Diamond said. “In 18 hours, we’ve received over 10,000 requests—around 500 applications per hour. It’s unprecedented.”

The South African Chamber of Commerce, typically focused on facilitating business relations between South Africa and the U.S., has shifted its focus temporarily to accommodate the influx of relocation requests. Applicants range from businesspeople seeking new opportunities in the U.S. to professionals eager to bring their skills to the American market.

Why the Sudden Interest?

The new executive order appears to have simplified the process for certain categories of immigrants, creating what many see as a golden opportunity for a fresh start in the U.S. “This executive order has opened doors that many South Africans have been waiting for,” Diamond noted.

Each application represents a serious inquiry from individuals and families eager to pursue what they believe is a better future. Many cite concerns about South Africa’s economy, political instability, and lack of opportunities as driving factors for their desire to leave.

Processing the Surge

The Chamber is now working overtime to help South Africans navigate the relocation process. Each request must be carefully reviewed to ensure it meets the criteria outlined in the executive order. Diamond emphasized that the Chamber aims to help applicants understand the implications of the order and guide them in meeting the necessary requirements.

“This is not just a wave of random interest,” Diamond explained. “It’s a story of hope and change. Thousands of South Africans were clearly prepared for this moment and are now taking steps to achieve their American dream.”

A Reflection of Broader Sentiment

The sudden surge in applications highlights the growing uncertainty felt by many South Africans about the future. With 10,000 requests flooding in within hours, it’s evident that many had been waiting for just such an opportunity to leave.

While the Chamber continues to manage the influx, this phenomenon underscores a broader trend: an increasing number of South Africans are looking for new beginnings abroad, driven by a desire for stability, opportunity, and growth.
