Founding Member Phasoane Mphahlele Resigns from EFF, Citing Betrayal of Core Principles

Phasoane Mphahlele, a founding member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has officially resigned from the party after ten years of what he called a “real, unbroken struggle.” His resignation, detailed in a lengthy letter, marks a significant turning point for the EFF amid growing internal tensions and ideological shifts.

Mphahlele’s exit, long anticipated by some within the party, reflects a crucial juncture in the EFF’s evolution. In his resignation letter, he expressed both pride in his contributions and deep disappointment with the party’s current direction. “I joined the EFF to champion economic freedom for the marginalized. Sadly, I’ve witnessed a shift from our core values, where personal ambitions now eclipse the revolutionary ideals we once stood for,” he wrote.

In a scathing critique, Mphahlele described the EFF as becoming a “red DA,” accusing the leadership of betraying its founding principles. He pointed to growing internal divisions, a lack of transparency, and an increasingly toxic political culture. “The struggle I committed myself to was always about the liberation of the people, not consolidating power for an elite few. The EFF has become a reflection of the very system we set out to dismantle,” he added.

His resignation comes as the EFF faces rising internal discord, particularly over its alignment with the Government of National Unity (GNU) and accusations of favoritism within leadership structures. Political observers believe his departure may inspire other disillusioned members to follow suit, potentially deepening the cracks within the party.

Though Mphahlele has not revealed his future plans, he remains steadfast in his mission for economic justice. “The platform may change, but my commitment to serving the people is unshakable,” he assured in his closing remarks.

The EFF has yet to comment on Mphahlele’s resignation. However, political analysts see his departure as a reflection of deeper issues within the party, raising questions about its future unity and ideological consistency.

As the EFF navigates this critical period, Mphahlele’s resignation may prompt broader introspection within the movement, forcing it to confront the growing tensions and contradictions shaping its path forward.
