A cash-in-transit robbery near the NPC cement factory has led to a complete road closure in the area. The incident, which involved heavy gunfire and an explosion, remains an active crime scene.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed multiple casualties. “On the N2 between the M7 and Higginson Highway, security officials and bystanders have been caught in the crossfire. The entire freeway is closed, and motorists should avoid the area at all costs,” he said.
A woman was fatally shot, and several others were injured during the heist on Tuesday morning. Emergency responders say she was caught in the gunfight between security officers and the robbers as they fled. Another woman was injured when a stray bullet struck her inside a taxi.
Dhevan Govindasamy from PT Alarms, who responded to the shootout, described how the robbers attempted to hijack a vehicle. “Pedestrians were walking to work when the suspects tried to hijack a Mercedes. They shot a female pedestrian, and another woman in a taxi was hit by a bullet through the window. She was rushed to hospital. A security officer also sustained multiple gunshot wounds but is stable,” he said.
The gang detonated explosives on a cash van near the NPC cement factory before escaping. Eyewitness Darryl Engelbrecht, stuck in traffic, walked to the scene and described the aftermath.
“A helicopter and special armed forces were on site, but the suspects had already fled in a blue Toyota Corolla and a silver Polo,” he said.
Police are investigating the incident as they search for the perpetrators.
