Thuli Madonsela Slams Trump’s Threat to Cut US Funding Over Land Expropriation Bill

Renowned legal scholar and social justice advocate Professor Thuli Madonsela has strongly condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to cut funding to South Africa over its newly enacted land expropriation bill. Trump’s remarks, in which he labeled the legislation a human rights violation, have sparked outrage among South African officials, with Madonsela leading the charge against what she calls external intimidation.

“It was inevitable. The falsehoods. The intimidation. We need to know if our leaders anticipated this,” Madonsela stated, questioning whether South Africa’s political leadership was prepared for the international backlash.

I saw this coming. The lies. The bullying. The question is, did our leaders see this coming? Are we ready for the winter coming our way. Or will we take Trump and Musk’s Trojan horses for expediency that will unleash harm on our people and our hard earned transformation project…

She warned against yielding to pressure from powerful foreign figures such as Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, both of whom have voiced opposition to South Africa’s land reform efforts. “The question is, will we take Trump and Musk’s Trojan horses for expediency that will unleash harm on our people and our hard-earned transformation project for years to come—if not forever?”

The land expropriation bill, signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa, allows for the redistribution of land without compensation, a move intended to address racial disparities in property ownership stemming from apartheid. While critics, including Trump, argue that it infringes on private property rights, supporters view it as a necessary step toward correcting historical injustices.

Madonsela’s response highlights the global implications of South Africa’s land reform debate, touching on themes of human rights, economic justice, and international diplomacy. As tensions rise, the issue continues to be a focal point in South Africa’s domestic policy and its relations with global powers.
