MK Party Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu has categorically denied claims by the African National Congress (ANC) that some former ANC members who defected to the Jacob Zuma-led MK Party are considering rejoining the ruling party.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Shivambu accused the ANC of spreading “desperate propaganda” in an attempt to undermine the MK Party’s growing influence. “There is no truth to the claims that MK Party members are returning to the ANC. This is pure fabrication designed to destabilize our movement and create doubt among our members,” Shivambu asserted.

The ANC recently suggested that it was in discussions with former members who had left the party but had since become disillusioned with the MK Party. Shivambu, however, dismissed this narrative, emphasizing that those who joined the MK Party did so out of conviction and shared ideals for a reformed South Africa.

“The ANC has devolved into a corrupt and ineffective organization that no longer serves the people. Our members left because they believe in a cause rooted in accountability and prioritizing the needs of South Africans—not the enrichment of a self-serving elite,” Shivambu said.

The MK Party, established by former President Jacob Zuma and a group of disillusioned ANC veterans, has positioned itself as a reform-driven alternative, championing anti-corruption efforts and grassroots mobilization. Since its inception, the party has drawn numerous high-profile figures, including former leaders from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and other political stalwarts.

Political analysts argue that the ANC’s claims reflect anxiety over the MK Party’s rising popularity, particularly as the 2024 elections approach. “The ANC is clearly feeling the heat as the MK Party continues to attract disenchanted members and gain traction among voters. These statements could be part of an effort to discredit the MK Party,” said political analyst Thando Mkhize.

Shivambu reaffirmed the MK Party’s commitment to its mission, underscoring the unity within its ranks. “Our focus remains steadfast on the goals we have set out to achieve. The ANC’s attempts to undermine us are futile and will not derail our progress,” he stated.

As political tensions escalate, the MK Party’s defiance highlights the growing challenge it poses to the ANC’s traditional dominance in South African politics. With the 2024 elections on the horizon, the competition between these parties is set to intensify.
