South Africa’s political arena may be on the brink of another seismic shift, as Floyd Shivambu, Secretary General of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), is reportedly preparing to establish a new political party. Rumors of his imminent resignation from the MKP have sparked widespread speculation, with insiders suggesting that his departure could happen within days.

Sources within the MKP indicate that Shivambu’s resignation letter is nearly finalized, marking the culmination of months of dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership and strategic direction. Reports suggest that Shivambu has become increasingly critical of internal policies and has quietly rallied support for his new political vision.

A Bold Political Move

Shivambu’s anticipated resignation and the creation of a new party come as little surprise to political observers. Renowned for his fiery rhetoric and organizational acumen, Shivambu has earned a reputation as a maverick in South African politics. His 2024 departure from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) was similarly contentious, citing ideological differences over economic policy and governance.

The rumored party is expected to champion economic emancipation, national unity, and a return to grassroots activism—core values Shivambu advocated during his time in the EFF and later attempted to promote within the MKP. Analysts predict that his initiative could attract disillusioned members from both the EFF and MKP, potentially disrupting the political landscape ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Divided Opinions

Reactions to Shivambu’s potential move have been mixed. Supporters hail him as a visionary leader willing to challenge the status quo, while critics argue that his frequent political realignments reflect personal ambition rather than a commitment to collective progress.

Nhlamulo Ndhlela, spokesperson for the MKP, commented: “While we respect Commander Shivambu’s contributions to the MKP, his departure, if confirmed, would be a loss. However, our movement remains united and focused on its mission.”

What Lies Ahead?

Shivambu’s rumored party is expected to launch in the coming months, with groundwork already being laid to establish a national presence. His ability to mobilize support will be critical as he navigates an already crowded and competitive political environment.

As South Africans await official confirmation of his resignation and the unveiling of his new political project, one thing is clear: Floyd Shivambu’s next move will inject fresh energy into the country’s political discourse, potentially reshaping its trajectory as the nation approaches a pivotal election year.
