MK Party Chief Whip Mzwanele Manyi has issued a strong warning to critics of former President Jacob Zuma, asserting that any disrespect toward Zuma is an affront to his supporters and admirers. The statement comes amid ongoing public debates over the legacy of Zuma, a figure whose impact on South African politics remains deeply polarizing.
“Let me make this abundantly clear,” Manyi declared. “If you disrespect and undermine H.E. President Zuma, you are disrespecting and undermining all of us who adore him and his wisdom.”
Let me make this abundantly clear.
If you disrespect & undermine H.E President Zuma, you are disrespecting and undermining all of us who adore him and his wisdom.Chances are that you were not even born yet when he was already in Robben Island for the liberation of South Africa. pic.twitter.com/zhRY3Wexb4

Manyi, an outspoken advocate within the Radical Economic Transformation (RET) faction of the African National Congress (ANC), emphasized Zuma’s legacy as a freedom fighter. He reminded critics of Zuma’s sacrifices during the apartheid era, particularly his time imprisoned on Robben Island.
“Chances are you were not even born yet when he was already on Robben Island for the liberation of South Africa,” Manyi said, underscoring that Zuma’s contributions to the fight against apartheid are often overshadowed by contemporary controversies.
Jacob Zuma served as South Africa’s president from 2009 to 2018, a tenure marked by both praise for his anti-apartheid efforts and criticism for allegations of corruption and state capture. His recent legal battles and imprisonment for contempt of court have further polarized public opinion. Supporters argue Zuma is a victim of political persecution, while detractors view his presidency as a low point in South Africa’s democratic history.
Manyi’s comments reflect the views of Zuma loyalists, who believe that criticism of the former president is part of a broader campaign to delegitimize his contributions to South Africa’s liberation and undermine the push for radical economic reforms.
“To undermine President Zuma is to undermine the sacrifices made by countless South Africans who fought for this country’s freedom,” Manyi asserted. “We will not allow his legacy to be tarnished.”
The former president’s ongoing legal challenges continue to ignite heated debates within the ANC and across the nation. Manyi’s remarks highlight the enduring divisions within South African politics, as Zuma’s legacy remains a focal point of both reverence and controversy.
