Ramaphosa Warns ANC: Renew or Perish Amid Declining Public Support

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has delivered a stark warning about the party’s future, stating that South Africa’s ruling party risks collapse if it fails to undergo urgent renewal. Speaking during the ANC’s annual January 8 statement, Ramaphosa candidly addressed the party’s declining support in the 2024 national elections, attributing the loss to its tarnished image.

“The ANC needs to renew itself or perish,” Ramaphosa declared. “We must confront the reality that the damaged image of the party, marred by allegations of corruption and inefficiency, has alienated many South Africans.”

The ANC, in power since 1994, saw a significant drop in its share of the vote during the 2024 elections, reflecting widespread voter dissatisfaction over persistent unemployment, failing service delivery, and internal factional conflicts.

Analysts Echo Urgency for Renewal

Political analyst Susan Booyen noted that Ramaphosa’s statement signals an internal acknowledgment of the ANC’s precarious position. “This is a critical juncture for the ANC. The president is recognizing that without substantial reforms, the party could face irrelevance. The electoral decline is a wake-up call,” she told eNCA.

Booyen emphasized that genuine renewal requires more than rhetoric. “Structural and leadership changes are essential. The ANC must demonstrate decisive action against corruption and refocus on improving the lives of ordinary South Africans,” she added.

A Call for Unity and Accountability

Ramaphosa urged party members to commit to unity and a return to the ANC’s core mission of serving the people. “We need to strengthen the connection between the ANC and the communities we represent. Renewal is not optional; it is the only way forward,” he said.

This year’s January 8 statement, traditionally setting the party’s political tone for the year, carried an unmistakable sense of urgency. Ramaphosa appealed to both party members and the public for support in the ANC’s efforts to rebuild trust.

A Crossroads for the ANC

Observers agree that the ANC’s survival hinges on its ability to demonstrate accountability and deliver tangible improvements to South Africans. The party’s next steps will determine whether it can reverse its electoral decline and regain public confidence.

As the ANC charts its path forward, the actions it takes in the coming months will be critical in shaping its legacy and securing its relevance in South Africa’s evolving political landscape.
