Allegations of clandestine meetings between Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and former President Jacob Zuma have sparked speculation about a potential power struggle within the African National Congress (ANC). Reports suggest that Lesufi and Zuma are strategizing to challenge President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership, raising concerns about the stability of the party.

According to sources, Lesufi and Zuma have discussed ways to weaken Ramaphosa’s influence, including reshaping party structures and leveraging upcoming ANC leadership elections. Insiders claim the two share frustrations with Ramaphosa’s approach to governance, particularly his handling of corruption and economic reforms.

“Panyaza has grown disillusioned with Ramaphosa’s leadership style,” said a source close to the situation. “He believes a change is necessary, and Zuma is advising him on the strategy to achieve that.”

Divided Reactions Within the ANC

The allegations have divided opinions within the ANC. Party spokesperson Pule Mabe dismissed the claims as “fabrications,” asserting that the ANC remains united behind Ramaphosa.

However, some officials expressed concerns about Lesufi’s growing influence in Gauteng politics. “Lesufi is ambitious, and if this alliance with Zuma is true, it could destabilize the party,” said one unnamed official.

Zuma’s involvement has amplified tensions, given his controversial legacy and the continued loyalty of the “Zuma faction” within the ANC. Critics fear his influence could reignite divisions within the party, further complicating efforts to maintain cohesion.

Broader Implications for the ANC

Political analysts warn that any internal leadership battle could damage the ANC’s standing with voters. “The ANC is already grappling with declining public support,” said analyst John Matiso. “Infighting at the top could erode confidence in the party and exacerbate its challenges.”

While some ANC members are calling for transparency and unity, others worry that the alleged alliance between Lesufi and Zuma represents a deeper rift within the party.

What Lies Ahead

As the situation unfolds, questions remain about the veracity of the claims and the potential fallout for South Africa’s political landscape. If the reports are substantiated, the ANC may face a critical test of its ability to maintain internal stability while addressing broader national challenges.

The coming months will likely reveal whether Lesufi and Zuma can mount a credible challenge to Ramaphosa’s leadership or if unity within the ANC will prevail. For now, the party—and the nation—await clarity on these explosive allegations.
