Shivambu Claims Founding Role in EFF, Sparks Rift with Malema

The simmering tension between former EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu and party leader Julius Malema appears to be escalating following Shivambu’s controversial remarks at a recent MK Party rally. Addressing a crowd of supporters, Shivambu boldly claimed that he, not Malema, was the true architect behind the formation of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

“I was the individual who conceptualized the EFF,” Shivambu reportedly declared. “Malema just came on board later to lead what I had already established.”

These statements have added fuel to a longstanding feud, particularly after Shivambu’s resignation from the EFF and subsequent alignment with the MK Party.

Political analysts suggest Shivambu’s comments may be a calculated move to bolster his influence within his new political home. His claim challenges Malema’s long-standing narrative as the driving force behind the founding of the EFF in 2013, a central aspect of Malema’s leadership identity and political persona.

The EFF has yet to issue an official response, but insiders report growing frustration within the party over Shivambu’s repeated attempts to undermine Malema. “This isn’t just about history; it’s about leadership and legacy,” said one party source. “Shivambu is clearly trying to rewrite the story of the EFF to serve his ambitions in his new political space.”

Observers believe this rift could have far-reaching implications for both leaders. While Malema remains firmly in control of the EFF, persistent questions about internal divisions and succession planning linger. On the other hand, Shivambu’s alignment with the MK Party signals his ambitions to position himself as a major figure in South Africa’s shifting political landscape.

As the rivalry intensifies, it remains unclear how Malema will respond to this latest challenge. With both leaders vying for relevance and influence, their contest could reshape dynamics within their respective parties and potentially impact South Africa’s political environment ahead of the 2024 general elections.

For now, Shivambu’s provocative assertion has sparked widespread speculation about whether his political ambitions might ultimately threaten Malema’s enduring legacy in South African politics.
