The Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) announced an escalation in law enforcement operations starting Tuesday and continuing through Christmas Day, aiming to ensure the safety of all road users during the festive season.
Increased Traffic Volumes Expected
GTP spokesperson Sello Maremane stated that traffic volumes are expected to surge as holidaymakers travel to various destinations. To address this, the department has implemented enhanced enforcement strategies, prioritizing community safety.
Key Routes Under Close Monitoring
Several high-risk routes, known for pedestrian fatalities, will be closely monitored:
- N1 Pretoria to Polokwane: Between Sefako Makgatho and Hammanskraal off-ramps.
- R80 Mabopane: Between Rosslyn and Soshanguve off-ramps.
- N4 Pretoria to Mpumalanga: Between Watermeyer off-ramp and Solomon Mahlangu Drive.
- N1 South: From Freedom Park to Orange Farm.
- N12 West: Towards Westonaria.
- R21: From Olifantsfontein to Boksburg.
Focus on Human Error and Enforcement Operations
Maremane emphasized that many accidents are caused by human error, including texting while driving, speeding, drunk driving, unsafe overtaking, and failing to adapt to road conditions.
To combat these issues, the GTP’s enforcement measures will include:
- Speed enforcement.
- Anti-drunk driving operations.
- Vehicle and driver fitness checks.
- Road safety campaigns at one-stop centers.
- Anti-crime operations in hotspots.
- Anti-spiking initiatives.
“Our message to all road users is responsible road usage to preserve lives and ensure everyone arrives alive,” said Maremane.
Government-Led Road Safety Blitz
Gauteng acting Premier Lebogang Maile and Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela will lead a road safety blitz at Chris Hani Baragwanath Taxi Rank in Soweto.
This blitz forms part of the Gauteng government’s integrated festive season law enforcement plan, which has been approved by the executive council.
Coordinated Efforts to Reduce Road Accidents
The plan focuses on reducing traffic accidents through coordinated efforts involving municipalities, visible policing, and integrated responses to road traffic challenges.
As the festive season progresses, the Gauteng government and traffic police remain committed to ensuring safer roads for all citizens.
