A fatal accident early this morning at Makhado Business Centre along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway claimed two lives and left several others injured. The collision involved a long-distance bus and a Toyota Fortuner, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

According to local authorities, the accident occurred around 6:30 AM. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with the bus, carrying passengers on a cross-border route, colliding with the Fortuner, which was traveling in the opposite direction.

Limpopo Traffic Police Spokesperson Captain Mpho Mokoena confirmed the fatalities, stating, “Regrettably, two individuals were declared deceased on the spot. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby healthcare facilities.”

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Toyota Fortuner may have swerved into the bus’s lane, possibly to avoid an obstruction. Captain Mokoena emphasized that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Residents near the accident site expressed sorrow and frustration, noting that the highway has been the site of frequent accidents. “This road is dangerous; we need urgent safety improvements,” one witness remarked.

The injured were transported to Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed that some are in critical condition. Authorities are in the process of notifying the families of the deceased and have appealed for any additional information from the public regarding the crash.

The collision caused substantial traffic delays, with authorities working to clear the busy highway. Motorists have been urged to drive cautiously, especially during the festive season when traffic volumes tend to rise.

The Limpopo Department of Transport extended condolences to the families of the victims and pledged a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The department reiterated the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations and highlighted the importance of improved road safety measures.

This tragic accident is a somber reminder of the risks of road travel and the collective responsibility of all road users to prioritize safety to prevent such devastating losses.
