EFF Stresses Unity and Discipline Ahead of Leadership Conference

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Secretary-General Marshall Dlamini has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to collective decision-making, emphasizing that individual ambitions will not take precedence over the organization’s revolutionary goals. His remarks come amid growing speculation about Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi’s candidacy for leadership positions at the upcoming National People’s Assembly.

Speaking to the media, Dlamini dismissed the notion that the assembly would be overshadowed by personal rivalries, declaring, “We are not going to reduce the conference to an individual, as no one is bigger than the EFF.” He underscored the party’s founding principles of unity, discipline, and ideological commitment, stressing that all deliberations would prioritize these values.

Questions Around Ndlozi’s Future

Ndlozi, a founding member of the EFF and its former national spokesperson, has been a prominent figure in the party since its inception. His exclusion from Julius Malema’s reported leadership slate has sparked concerns among grassroots supporters, some of whom view him as a critical voice within the movement.

Supporters argue that Ndlozi’s intellectual contributions and charisma make him a strong candidate for senior leadership, but critics fear the growing influence of “slates” over open democratic processes within the EFF. Despite this, Dlamini firmly rejected the notion of factionalism, stating, “The conference is not about personal preferences; it is about strengthening the EFF’s capacity to advance its revolutionary goals.”

Focus on 2024 Elections

The National People’s Assembly, set to convene this weekend, will bring together EFF delegates from across South Africa to elect new leadership and refine the party’s strategies for the 2024 general elections. While policy discussions and campaign planning are expected to dominate the agenda, the leadership contest has drawn significant attention.

Dlamini emphasized the importance of unity during this critical period, noting that any internal contestation must align with the party’s broader mission. “We are guided by the constitution of the EFF and a collective vision. That is what will determine the outcomes of this assembly,” he said.

Broader Implications for EFF Democracy

The leadership dynamics have reignited debates about the EFF’s internal democracy and its approach to dissenting voices. Ndlozi’s supporters view his potential marginalization as a test of the party’s commitment to inclusivity and ideological rigor. However, Dlamini’s statements signal a firm stance on maintaining organizational discipline and ensuring that individual ambitions do not disrupt the party’s focus.

As the EFF seeks to solidify its position ahead of the 2024 elections, the outcomes of the National People’s Assembly will not only shape its leadership but also signal how the party navigates the balance between unity, democracy, and revolutionary ambition.
