Ngizwe Mchunu Rekindles Sponsorship Deal with JAC Motors Amid Controversy

Former UKhozi FM presenter Ngizwe Mchunu has resumed his sponsorship with JAC Motors nearly a year after the company severed ties with him due to public pressure from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The renewed partnership was marked by JAC Motors presenting Mchunu with a brand-new vehicle, signaling a significant turnaround in their relationship.

In December 2023, JAC Motors canceled Mchunu’s sponsorship following accusations from the EFF that he was promoting tribalism. The controversy stemmed from a statement Mchunu made during an event in Durban, where he suggested that EFF leader Julius Malema should focus his political campaigns in Limpopo, “where other Shangaans live,” rather than in KwaZulu-Natal. The remarks drew sharp criticism, with the EFF calling for JAC Motors to distance itself from Mchunu.

Despite the backlash and the subsequent fallout, JAC Motors has now opted to rekindle its relationship with Mchunu, providing him with a new car. Mchunu, who refers to himself as the “President of Amabhinca,” expressed his elation during the handover ceremony, declaring, “The enemy has been defeated and must go to jail.” While he did not name specific adversaries, his statement was widely interpreted as a jab at the EFF and his critics.

Mchunu remains a polarizing figure in South African politics, with his statements often sparking debates about tribalism and free speech. His partnership with JAC Motors underscores his enduring popularity among certain segments of the population, despite the controversies surrounding him.

The decision by JAC Motors to renew the sponsorship may be a calculated move to leverage Mchunu’s loyal fan base. However, the company has not yet issued an official statement on its reasons for re-establishing the partnership. Critics argue that this decision could reignite past controversies and damage the brand’s reputation among broader audiences.

Mchunu’s actions and rhetoric continue to stir debates about the role of identity and unity in South African politics. His unapologetic stance and growing influence among certain groups highlight the complexities of navigating public sentiment in a diverse and politically charged society. Whether this renewed partnership will bolster JAC Motors’ image or provoke further backlash remains to be seen.
