The close-knit community of Margate is reeling after a tragic shooting incident early last Sunday morning claimed the lives of Simone Sania Naidoo (31) and Bruce Shangase (31). The heartbreaking incident has left questions unanswered and a family in deep mourning.

A Disturbing Scene Unfolds

The shooting occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Varley Road. A nearby resident, alarmed by the sound of gunfire, discovered Naidoo injured and immediately called the police and emergency services.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the case is being investigated as both a murder and an inquest. “A woman was allegedly shot and killed by a suspect known to her, who was also found dead at the scene with a gun next to his body,” said Netshiunda.

A Beloved Teacher Taken Too Soon

Simone Naidoo, a teacher at St Martin De Porres School in Port Shepstone, was remembered as a dedicated educator who touched the lives of her students and community. Her family is devastated by her sudden and violent death.

“She didn’t deserve this,” said her uncle and family spokesperson, Jaya Pillay. “The family is shattered and requests privacy as they grieve. The perpetrator was unknown to us.”

Naidoo, originally from Ladysmith, had a passion for teaching. After matriculating from Ladysmith Secondary School, she earned her Bachelor of Education degree from Unisa in 2023 and was pursuing postgraduate studies. She started her teaching career at RA Engar Primary and recently secured a state-paid post at St Martin’s in May 2023.

“She loved her learners and treated each of them with compassion and care. Simone was a kind-hearted soul who dedicated herself to uplifting the underprivileged,” added Pillay.

A Life Built with Love and Determination

Naidoo lived with her grandparents in Marburg but had recently moved to her own apartment in Margate after securing a permanent teaching position. Her future seemed bright as she balanced her career and academic pursuits with a heart for helping others.

The Other Victim: Bruce Shangase

The second individual in the tragedy, Bruce Shangase, was a 31-year-old employed at a local security company. Originally from Nositha, Shangase’s connection to Naidoo remains unclear, but police are continuing their investigation.

A Community in Mourning

As details of the case unfold, the community remembers Naidoo for her unwavering dedication to her students and her compassionate spirit. The tragic loss of two young lives has left friends, family, and colleagues searching for answers and justice.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they work to piece together the events leading to this devastating outcome.
