Julius Malema, president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was the latest guest on YouTuber Lasizwe Dambuza’s hit show, Awkward Dates. Known for its unique format, the show features Lasizwe going on mock dates with various media and entertainment personalities.

Since its debut in August 2023, Awkward Dates has grown immensely, with 76 episodes uploaded by October 2024. The show’s popularity earned it a nomination for Best Online Content at the 2024 South African Film and Television Awards.

In this memorable episode, Malema showcased a lighter, more personal side of himself, revealing details about his upbringing, lifestyle, and even his romantic side.

A Glimpse into Malema’s World

Malema, who lives in Hyde Park, shared that his favourite meal is goat meat, best paired with whisky. He spoke about his upbringing in a township under the care of his grandmother, who raised nine children.

Despite his busy political career, Malema admitted to being a phone addict, saying, “In politics, we do not sleep; in other parts of the world, people are awake.”

On his romantic side, he described proposing to his wife as his most romantic gesture: “I went down on one knee to ask my wife to marry me. There is no romance bigger than that.”

Life Outside Politics

When asked about his travel habits, Malema revealed he prefers being chauffeured, adding, “I am not a stingy man; I strongly believe in girlfriend and spousal allowances.”

He also disclosed his passion for music, sharing that he spends his free time as a DJ. “Every house of mine has CDs. I DJ when I am free, like in December when I’m not doing anything.”

Malema reflected on his ambitions and what drives him, saying, “My favourite thing to dream about is success. I measure my success by becoming better than what my mom was. If my mom was here today, I would tell her that I love and appreciate all the things she did for me under very difficult circumstances.”

Malema’s Legacy

Malema’s appearance on Awkward Dates offered a rare glimpse of the politician’s personal life, revealing his warmth, humor, and values. As he balanced vulnerability with charm, the episode underscored why he remains one of South Africa’s most captivating public figures.

With the success of Awkward Dates and its growing acclaim, viewers are eager to see which other notable figures Lasizwe will host next.
