In a dramatic escalation of tensions within the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), party leader Julius Malema has issued a stark warning to his former deputy, Floyd Shivambu, threatening to reveal sensitive details about their past relationship if provoked further. This development follows a public exchange during an EFF press conference, exposing a widening rift between the two former allies.

Once regarded as inseparable comrades, Malema and Shivambu’s relationship has soured dramatically. Malema expressed his disappointment, claiming that Shivambu, alongside others, had been plotting against him. “They sat down and decided ‘we have to drop him, we have to finish him off,'” Malema said, implying a factional conspiracy within the EFF to remove him as leader.

Reflecting on their former bond, Malema asserted his unwavering support for Shivambu over the years, stating, “I did everything for him as a brother.” However, he warned of potential retaliation: “If I’m ever pushed, I will talk. Don’t push me.”

Shivambu has publicly distanced himself from the notion of a deep personal connection with Malema, describing their past relationship as more political than personal. Speaking on a podcast, Shivambu characterized their bond as akin to a “gangster relationship,” where accountability was often sacrificed for loyalty. “Sometimes this so-called brotherhood is not brotherhood at all,” he remarked.

The fallout between the two leaders, which began during their time in the ANC Youth League, has now reached a critical point, signaling a significant ideological and personal divide. Shivambu’s resignation from the EFF further strained their relationship, with both parties now exchanging veiled criticisms that threaten to destabilize the party’s internal unity.

As the situation unfolds, the implications for the EFF could be far-reaching. The public nature of the dispute underscores the volatility within South Africa’s political landscape and raises questions about the EFF’s cohesion moving forward.

With Malema’s warning hinting at possible revelations, the rift between these political heavyweights is likely to remain a focal point in South African politics, potentially reshaping both their careers and the future of the EFF.
