ANC Condemns Malema’s Ethnic Remarks, Warns Against Divisive Rhetoric in Limpopo

The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo has strongly rebuked Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema over controversial comments advocating preferential treatment for the Venda ethnic group. During a recent rally in Limpopo, Malema allegedly suggested that key political and economic roles in the province should be reserved for Venda people, triggering widespread outrage.

In a stern statement, the ANC in Limpopo condemned Malema’s remarks as divisive and harmful to the province’s multicultural harmony. “Limpopo is home to a variety of ethnic groups, and our strength lies in our diversity. To suggest that one group should be elevated above others is an insult to the principles of unity and non-racialism that our nation is built upon,” read the statement.

Jimmy Machaka, ANC Limpopo spokesperson, accused Malema of exploiting ethnic differences for political gain. “Malema’s remarks are dangerous and risk fueling divisions within our communities. Limpopo cannot afford the peril of ethnic favoritism. The ANC is unwavering in its commitment to equal opportunities for all South Africans, irrespective of ethnic background,” said Machaka. He called on Malema to retract his statement and issue a public apology, emphasizing the need for leaders to foster unity, not division.

The EFF, however, has defended its leader. EFF national spokesperson Sinawo Tambo dismissed the ANC’s criticism as exaggerated, claiming Malema’s comments were taken out of context. According to Tambo, Malema aimed to highlight the underrepresentation of Venda people in influential positions within the province, not to advocate for ethnic favoritism.

Political analysts have expressed concern over the potential impact of such rhetoric. “Remarks like these risk reigniting historical tensions that Limpopo has worked hard to overcome,” said Professor Tumi Mogano from the University of Limpopo. “It’s crucial for political leaders to promote inclusivity and avoid language that could fragment the province’s social fabric.”

As the debate continues, the ANC reiterated its dedication to fostering social cohesion and called on all political parties to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric. “Unity is the cornerstone of our democracy, and we must reject any efforts to undermine it,” the ANC’s statement concluded.

The incident underscores the importance of careful language in political discourse, especially in a diverse society like Limpopo, where ethnic harmony is critical for progress and stability.
