The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced the dismissal of its Mpumalanga leader, Mary Phadi, following serious allegations of misconduct, including an alleged plot to assassinate a political rival. Former President Jacob Zuma, who serves as the party’s leader, confirmed Phadi’s termination, citing a loss of confidence in her leadership and adherence to party principles.

Dismissal from Leadership

Phadi, a prominent businesswoman and president of the Truckers Association of South Africa, was asked to voluntarily resign from her position in the Mpumalanga legislature. When she refused, the MK Party’s national high command and Zuma made the decision to revoke her membership with immediate effect.

In a statement, the party outlined the reasons for her dismissal, including allegations of financial mismanagement, failure to comply with leadership directives, and tarnishing the party’s reputation. The leadership described the decision as “irrevocable” due to the severity of the accusations and her inadequate responses to them.

The speaker of the Mpumalanga provincial legislature has been formally informed of Phadi’s termination, and all official correspondence regarding her removal has been sent.

Assassination Plot Allegations

The dismissal comes amid claims that Phadi allegedly hired hitmen to assassinate her provincial rival, General Tough Mdluli, in the MK Party. Reports suggest that Mdluli filed a police case after receiving death threats and obtaining voice recordings allegedly discussing the plot against him.

Mdluli also accused Phadi of tampering with the MK Party’s provincial candidate list, elevating herself to the top position without following due process.

Party Leadership’s Response

The MK Party emphasized that Phadi’s removal was necessary to preserve the integrity of the organization. In a statement, they declared, *“Due to the gravity of the allegations coupled with Phadi’s inadequate responses, the leadership has made an irrevocable final decision to terminate her membership.”*

Political Fallout

Phadi’s dismissal highlights ongoing challenges within the MK Party as it seeks to stabilize its internal dynamics. The allegations against her have cast a shadow over the party’s operations in Mpumalanga, raising questions about governance and accountability within the organization.

The MK Party’s decisive action reflects its effort to maintain discipline and credibility as it navigates these controversies. However, the alleged assassination plot and financial misconduct may have lasting implications for the party’s reputation in Mpumalanga and beyond.

As investigations continue, the spotlight remains on both the MK Party and Mary Phadi, with the political landscape in Mpumalanga undergoing significant turbulence.
