  • EFF leader Julius Malema has rejected claims of being an authoritarian, affirming he is the “outgoing president” and will step down if not re-elected in the party’s upcoming elections.
  • Malema emphasized his commitment to democratic principles within the EFF, asserting that his leadership is not permanent and is subject to the party’s internal voting process.
  • Should he lose his position, Malema stated he would leave politics and focus on farming, underscoring his readiness to respect the will of the EFF members.

In a recent address, Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), dismissed claims that he holds an authoritarian grip over the party, emphasizing his position as the “outgoing president” and asserting he is ready to step aside if not re-elected in the upcoming party elections. Known for his bold leadership style, Malema clarified that he has no intention of imposing himself on the EFF if members opt for new leadership.

Responding to criticisms that label him a “dictator,” Malema stated, “Those who call me a dictator are misled. My role in this party is temporary and governed by the EFF’s democratic processes.” He underscored his respect for democratic principles within the party, countering any notion that he clings to power. “I’m the outgoing president of the EFF,” he reiterated, emphasizing that his future in leadership lies entirely in the hands of the members and the results of the upcoming internal elections.

The EFF is set to hold its elections next month, where Malema will be eligible to run for re-election. However, he made it clear that if he does not retain his position, he is prepared to step back from politics and focus on his personal interests, including farming. “If I am not re-elected, I will happily go back to farming,” Malema shared, reminding supporters that his ambitions extend beyond the political arena.

Malema’s comments come amidst growing speculation about his leadership style and potential future with the EFF, a party he co-founded in 2013 that has since become a prominent political force in South Africa, advocating for radical economic reform and land redistribution. His influence has been central to the party’s rise, making his possible departure a significant event in South African politics.

As the EFF prepares for its internal elections, Malema’s remarks highlight his commitment to democratic values and reassure members of his respect for their decision-making authority. Whether he continues as the party leader or transitions back to private life, Malema has made it clear that his allegiance is to the EFF’s democratic processes and the will of its members.
