  • Floyd Shivambu, newly appointed Secretary-General of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, confirms that the party will operate without an elective conference for now, ensuring former President Jacob Zuma’s continued influence.
  • Shivambu argues that avoiding such conferences prevents factionalism and external manipulation, reinforcing Zuma’s leadership.
  • The MK Party’s focus remains on grassroots expansion across South Africa, with leadership positions, including national organizer, still under discussion.

In a move that solidifies Jacob Zuma’s control over the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, Floyd Shivambu, the party’s newly appointed Secretary-General, has confirmed that the party will not hold an elective conference in the near future. This decision continues to allow Zuma to wield significant power within the party, as he is able to appoint leaders across different organizational levels.

Shivambu, in an interview, explained that refraining from holding a conference at this time was a strategic choice to avoid potential factionalism within the party. He suggested that such a conference could expose divisions and lead to financial pressures or external manipulation by individuals with ulterior motives. Instead, he emphasized that the MK Party would operate under Zuma’s “political and ideological leadership,” reinforcing Zuma’s central role in guiding the party’s direction.

Zuma’s influence has been apparent since the party’s inception, especially considering the series of leadership changes within the party’s structures in recent months. Shivambu, who previously served as the national organizer for MK, assumed the role of Secretary-General in August to help solidify the party’s framework and strengthen its organizational presence.

Shivambu reiterated that the primary goal for the MK Party at this stage is to ensure its representation across all voting districts, wards, sub-regions, regions, and provinces in South Africa. Once this foundational groundwork is laid, the party may reassess its leadership election process. However, Shivambu made it clear that such decisions were not urgent for the time being.

While Shivambu also alluded to potential future decisions regarding the selection of a national organizer, he stressed that no specific candidates have been decided upon. Leadership discussions within the party are ongoing, with the selection to be made from within the ranks of MK.

This latest development signals the MK Party’s focus on stability and central leadership under Zuma, as it seeks to broaden its influence at the grassroots level across South Africa.
