  • Police in KwaZulu-Natal swiftly arrested eight suspects in Jozini Town on November 7, 2024, seizing firearms with removed serial numbers, police uniforms, and a bulletproof vest linked to police equipment from North West Province.
  • This intelligence-driven operation was prompted by a vigilant community member who alerted police about a suspicious vehicle, allowing officers to intercept the suspects.
  • Authorities suspect the group may have been involved in activities that include impersonation of police officers to deceive citizens or facilitate criminal operations.

In a quick-response operation, KwaZulu-Natal police arrested eight suspects in Jozini Town on Thursday, November 7, 2024, following a resident’s tip-off about suspicious behavior. The well-coordinated stop-and-search of the vehicle described in the report led officers to uncover three firearms with serial numbers filed off, ammunition, and several police uniform pieces, including a bullet-resistant vest tied to the Vryburg Police Department in North West Province.

The altered serial numbers on the firearms suggest the weapons may have been used in illegal activities, making it challenging for law enforcement to trace their origins or previous owners. Possession of police uniforms raised further suspicions that the group may have intended to impersonate law enforcement, a tactic often used to mislead citizens or execute criminal activities.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner praised the proactive response from the Jozini community member, emphasizing that cooperation between residents and law enforcement is crucial to curbing crime.

The suspects, ranging in age from 29 to 55, remain in police custody, awaiting their court appearance, where they will face charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and unauthorized possession of police equipment. Authorities continue their investigations, exploring potential ties to criminal networks and assessing any risks arising from their possession of police gear.
